Fresh ginger is a very popular ingredient in both Chinese and Indian cuisine. There are many different ways you can use ginger in Chinese culture, whether it be medicinal purposes or Chinese cuisine, but for this article we’ll focus on the latter.
You can use ginger in so many dishes and ginger is also great in your tea and in desserts. I have to admit, most of the time when I cook food with ginger I just mince it, julienne it or slice.
I rarely use ginger juice when I cook. However when I prepare some Chiese desserts, for example, my favourite Chinese dessert ginger milk curd, that’s the moment that requires me to make some ginger juice.
But how do you make ginger juice from fresh ginger? I know it must be hard to imagine extra ginger juice from ginger, especially as it’s not a vegetable with a juicy texture like cucumber or carrots, but it is possible.
Making ginger juice really isn’t that difficult at all. You start by purchasing fresh ginger from your local supermarket (Chinese or regular, all sell it), wash the ginger and peel the sandy yellow skin off. You them take a grater and grate the ginger finely and squeeze the juice out of the ginger you just grated?
But how do you squeeze grated ginger? That’s very easy as well! I normally use a clean and dry cheesecloth or muslin square to help me to squeeze out the ginger juice.
You just need to collect and put all the grated ginger and place it on the centre of the cheesecloth or muslin square. Then hold tight and twist it really hard then you will squeeze out the juice out of the ginger. Just remember to prepare a bowl to catch all the ginger juice.
How to store the ginger juice?
Normally I just prepare enough ginger juice for the dish I need to cook. But if you need to store the ginger juice, I personally would recommend you to pour the ginger juice into an ice cube maker and make ice cubes out of it. Then you can store it in freezer bags or a container and store it in the freezer for 1-2 months.
If you store it in the refrigerator I would highly recommend you to use it within 3-5 days.
How to store fresh ginger at home?
Ginger should be stored unpeeled kept in a dark, cool corner of your home.
Chinese people always believe ginger is a “super food” or “super remedy” for many body irritations or diseases.
Here are some of health benefits of ginger:
Consuming ginger can help you to sooth your morning sickness. I basically lived off the ginger biscuits and ginger tea for first 4 months of my pregnancy.
